Down-Home Southern Vegan
Before I forget and start talking about current events or the inner workings of my mind, I want to make sure and tell you where we will be the rest of this month:
This Wednesday of course, we will be at Triangle Yoga and our other regular pick up points. This Saturday, March 25th, we will be at the Carrboro Farmers' Market from 9 - 12 pm. We will be offering selections from this week's menu, namely the Succotash Stew, Dirty Rice, and Sweet Potato Pie. Additionally we will have Banana Bread, Chinese Almond Cookies, Chocolate Crinkle Cookies (aka Snow-ploughed Field Cookies), and the perennial fave - Love Your Body Bites. Next Wednesday, March 29th, we will be at Triangle Yoga with an Asian-themed menu (spoiler alert). I will have to leave right at 6 pm, though, as I have a kirtan workshop in Raleigh immediately afterwards. If you have interest in that or know anyone in Raleigh who likes kirtan, please contact me for the details. Now let me tell you where Govinda's Catering will not be. We had a near-miss at a catering bid this month. Tomorrow the Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Quarterly Tri-County Women in Business Luncheon. Last month the secretary for the Chamber called me to ask for a proposal to cater this lunch (ooh la la for us!). I warned the receptionist that although I would be thrilled to draw up some sample menus for the event, there would be no meat anywhere on it. She was fine with that. Then 30 minutes later, she, or more likely some higher-up in the Chamber, wasn't fine with it. They had a reality check that they couldn't offer a meal to that many people (50 - 60 women) without offering any animal protein. Needless to say, I was disappointed but not shocked. It is the South, after all... which brings me to this week's menu. I wanted to test out some satisfying, down-home recipes, that if given the chance, I could present with confidence to a crowd such as mainstream business owners from Orange, Durham and Alamance counties. I decided to attend the lunch anyway, in order to meet folks and gain some exposure and bring some samples (thanks to Angela, our logo & graphics designer, for suggesting this). The logistical challenge of attending anything, what to speak of a 2-hour luncheon, on a Tuesday is that it puts me way, way behind on what is already a massive work day. Enter Radha, our baker extraordinaire, to the rescue! I asked Radha to take responsibility for the dessert and one of the entrees in order to free up some time for me to embark on this networking adventure. I am pleased to announce that Radha came through with some brilliant menu suggestions (as I knew she would). She will be making the Mac & Cheese and the Sweet Potato Pie. Watch out y'all, there are some good eats in town!
